No new hardware will be around until Q4 this year. If you get an Arcade or Pro unit with HDMI, then you're getting the latest hardware. With boxed Elites there is no way to tell for sure but you should be safe. No models are impervious to RRoDs, but these newest units have the same failure rates as most other electronics.

Seconded about the grammar. Self-boot means it will boot itself. The concept always seemed pretty self explanatory to me... think of it this way. It boots itself, so you don't need a boot disc to start it up.

Ichorid4 Sorry that this is off-topic, since I don't have a PS3. I do have a PSN account for my PSP- are there any PSN games that support cross-platform play between the two? I know things like flOw and EchoChrome are playable on both machines... just wondering what I can use my PSN ID for.

It's not even good in theory. When I could be either playing MGS4, or petering around in some gay Second Life-knockoff, which would I be realistically doing? The whole thing is asinine. Home is simply a gimmick. Marketing misdirection at its finest.

When talking business you have to factor in development costs, PR and advertising costs - those trailers don't make themselves - licensing costs from Sony, and publishing, pressing and distribution costs. But that is pretty irrelevant given nobody knows the dollar amount that MGS4 did or did not cost to make. The point is development alone is a single fraction of the overall cost. Also when you calculate 1 million units sold x $60RRP = $60 million revenue, you're smoking something, that's for sure. 50% of the cut AT LEAST goes to the retailer and middlemen in distribution. As mentioned a cut goes to Sony, the publisher and the developer, but that's after all the salespeople get theirs. Finally, to be 'successful' a title should earn AT LEAST twice its initial investment. That's dev + advertising + distribution. Breaking even? Not an option really. Breaking even is what closes studios - if a solid profit isn't being made that's just bad business. But who cares if the business sense in this thread fails - the point is MGS4 cannot really turn enough revenue to generate a lot of profit if it stays an exclusive. 8 million PS3s worldwide... most of them bought as cheap BD-ROM drives... how many of those can really attach a copy of MGS4? Not enough, I say, to justify all the costs mentioned so far.

Wii has a number of good games countable on one hand, starting with Wii Tennis and ending with Smash Bros. Considering all the gimmickware that comes out for it I'd say the ratio is pretty skewed, but I see your point. The Xbox 360 actually has a better ratio simply because there are less games out for it, as compared with the Wii. Seriously titles for that thing are in the many hundreds in Japan.

Saturday spent the day doing my unemployed grad student thing, at night went to the MTV Australia Awards afterparty at a club at Newtown, hosted by 50 Cent and G-Unit. Sunday... err nothing. Finished Gears of War on Insane, then played VF5 for a bit, followed by getting into Armored Core 4 finally. And watched Gladiators. In other words a boring at-home day. Today (Monday) used up my April free movie tickets seeing Deception and Street Kings. Wouldn't have another chance since I work all day tomorrow and start an evening course on Wednesday.

Don't think so. Some are emulated (like all Sega games for XBLA) but most other XBLA games are ported and run straight off the Xbox 360 hardware. So you'd need an Xbox 360 emulator if anything. UMK3 isn't remade though- it is basically the arcade rom with a front-end that ties in the Live achievements and matchmaking service.

I'm trying to kill General RAAM on insane in Gears of War right now, and he is quite a handful.

For Crysis I said it didn't look good enough to justify the hardware it required. GTA4 doesn't look good enough for the hardware its running. I absolutely understand its because of how big the city is, all the AI things going on the same time, and all the rendering / memory issues associated with that. Still, they detract from how good it looks in the end. When I look at Niko he is certainly not the best-looking character I've ever seen. When I get in a car its like a toned down version of Burnout Paradise's looks. That said, I don't get how the graphics get praised so unilaterally.

Just a quick note- it was developed by Midway and published by Midway. Eurocom just worked on the home ports.

Cool, now I know who the hell Movento is. Had been wondering about that.
