To be honest, I still don't know if it was a virus, but that's the only conclusion I was able to draw back then. I booted up the thing, but the keyboards keys would no longer output the letter I pressed, Instead random gibberish came out. As you can imagine booting games became quite a chore. If I manged to type the proper boot commands, the game(s) wouldn't run, instead showing screen after screen of more weirdness. The Commodore worked fine the day before, and I had just bought a 5.25" floppy drive from a friend to accompany my aging tape drive. Played a few games, decided to boot another game, and then Boom.
