Dark is nice, it's not too dark. If it's too dark you need to get your eyes and/or monitor checked by a professional. Just change the skin at the bottom of the board. Don't use the ones that are marked with an asterisk.

You can if you use 800MB CDs. You can overburn too (in most CD burning applications anyway), but it might not always work.

Oh yeah, that crappy desktop... That's weird to say the least. When did this happen? Reboot doesn't help? How about reinstalling your graphics card drivers. Search the net, there are several tweak sites that tell you how to change the actual bitdepth of the desktop and how to enable/disable the build information.
