Agozer's power trippin'
random guy replied to shin_nihon_kikaku's topic in Suggestions Box [/feedback]
I must admit that there have been a lot of thread closures lately, but I don't think it's just been agozer. It's mainly because alot of threads which are linked to rom-links/requests have been posted, which under the new rules must be closed. -
Best Place to Trade in Used N64 system and Games?
random guy replied to gameguy56's topic in Gossip Café [/offtopic]
Look at his sig! -
This guy makes a point... Anon. But my point was a lot of identical twins DO turn out to be pretty damn similar - even when they've never met.

What do you think about manipulating genes?
random guy replied to Jjangthekid's topic in Gossip Café [/offtopic]
I just think it could turn out to be a really bad idea - the kind of problem I like to call "the Roman Plumbing Syndrome". The idea is that the Romans developed indoor plumbing which on the surface seemed like an excellent idea, so they got all behind it, building plumbing everywhere. The problem was they built all their pipes out of lead, and as we NOW know, drinking out of water contaminated by led is a BAAAD idea. It was one of the things which led to the decline of the roman empire. My point is, this seems like a really great idea at the moment, and it seems like there are any number of potential benefits. The only problem is, right now we don't know the consequences. (And don't think that the Roman Plumbing Syndrome was an isolated incident; oh no - think of asbestos, or thalidomide.) -

I hate to have to tell you guys (because I used to believe in it too, ideologically) but the Tabula Rasa (blank slate) theory has been very out-dated. Because I am an equal-opportunist (is that a word?) I wanted very much to believe that anyone can do anything if given the opportunity - but unfortunately that is just not true. In extreme cases, there are a number of identical twins who ever met each other and yet ended up in the same careers (I remember a photo from my first year psych textbook of two twins who weren't even aware of the other's existence, and yet both of them turned out to be firemen). As I continue to think about this debate, I am coming to the conclusion that there is no exact percentage that can be attributable in this debate - different people will be affected by their genes and their environments differently. For example, someone who was really abused and understimulated in infancy would have been affected more by the environment, but someone who had a safe upbringing (but no big life lessons or surprises) would be more affected more by their genes.

Wow, that's pretty thin. It looks awesome, more kudos to Sony!

Ummm....not neccessary. I remember there is one movie showing that DNA will not define everything in life. It is the will, the environment that shape the people. Can't remember the name of the movie. Galcutta, Calcutta or something Edit: never mind, Gryph got it.

HAHAHAHAHA! Yep, if you want to steer away from "gay" clothes, it's MUCH better to buy clothes that are associated with the NAVY!

Admittedly, taking a few psychology classes will better prepare people for this debate, but everyone is entitled an opinion on this issue. The question is, what do you think more affects people's development, their genetics (nature), or the environment they're raised in (nurture)? Before you decide, here's some evidence for both: Strong evidence in favour of nature: In twin studies of IQ, the IQs of identical twins (twins who share 100% of the same genes) raised apart from each other was more highly correlated (.86) than even fraternal twins (sharing 50% of the same genes) reared together in the same family (.60). Siblings raised together was correlated at only.40. For laymen, that means that identical twins who had never necessarily even met before had more similar IQ scores than fraternal twins raised in the same family, and far more similar scores than siblings raised in the same family. In the 60's, a pair of 22-month olf twins went in for medical circumsision - one of the twin's censores was rendered unusable by an accident. The surgeons turned him into a girl and gave her feminine hormones. Yet even though she was raised as a girl, she never felt like a girl and was chronically depressed, and at 20 decided to begin the procedures to turn himself back into a guy. -It was later discovered that there's a tiny area of the brain that is different in males and females. In males this area is bigger than females. Interestingly, in transexuals, that area is closer to the size in the female brain. Strong evidence in favour of nurture: A number of adoption studies have shown that children born into cognitively underachieving families but adopted by cognitively overachieving families have had their projected IQs raised by up to 15 points. Children who have been sufficiently abused or understimulated in the early years of life lack the capacity to become intelligent. In fact, if infants are not sufficiently stimulated in their first year or so or life, their brains will not form to the extent of a normal brain. In extreme examples, such as the "wild child" - a boy raised by wolves in his infancy - these children will not be able to learn how to talk. My view: Although genetics does have a significant impact on a person's upbringing, I think the final word rests with the environment, because although your genes will not change once you are born, even Einstein, had he been raised in an abusive and understimulated environment, would have been unable to achieve the things he did.

Gamecube Emulator (Real)
random guy replied to Shibathedog's topic in Wii & GameCube Emulators [/pc/wii+gc]
My thoughts exactly. So lets say if i rip the game file of of a GC game can i just play the game through the emulator like that? On a somewhat related note, I just found empty MiniDVD-R discs at my local store today. Hmm...that's HUGE news, I thought they didn't sell mini-dvd-rs publically? But if they do someone should test the gamecube's copy-protection ability. -
AOL Moves Beyond Passwords for Log-Ons
random guy replied to Alpha's topic in Gossip Café [/offtopic]
Sheesh, I don't want biometric identification just to use my computer! I mean, sure, additional security against h4x0rs would be useful, but talk about a big-brother way to do it! I'm really surprised this is happening in Europe, too, what with their restrictive privacy laws! -
Well, I have a nasty habit of talking to myself (not out-loud, just in my head) when I haven't had any direct contact with anyone for a while, so I guess it would have to be one of the all-too-many times I've realised I've been walking through a public place with my mouth moving.

It's not hard to judge my fashion sense - I don't need a picture. Every day I wear black chino jeans, a t-shirt (usually a band t-shirt), and if it's cold enough a jacket of some kind.

Aha! Some justice for a change! This finally proves that just because you are a big company doesn't mean you will ultimately win a lawsuit. Which is good because lawsuits are getting out of hand. Fox news, for instance, has sued Al Franken (and lost) and in fact even threatened to sue the Simpsons over the Krusty for Kongress episode (although they wisely backed down when Matt Groening stuck it out, no doubt assuming that Rupert Murdoch would not be so keen to pay the bills to sue himself!) -
The Ultimate ePSXe 1.6.0 compatability list
random guy replied to Weirdy's topic in PS1 Emulators [/pc/ps1]
That's not hostile? I call it common sense. Well I did burn it with a cue file. But I wouldn't call knowing about ePSXe burning isos common sense. It's so uncommon, I bet 95% of the Earths population don't know what a cue file is. Well, anyone who makes isos or uses daemon tools should know what a cue file is. I'm sure hostility wasn't intended in Weirdzangiege's post, you just read too much into it. -

I don't believe in fashion. I think it's a myth, just like the tooth fairy.

Hilarious, and right on the money!

That's awesome, I saw it twice - once without the commentary, and once with.

Amorphous yet malleable blob of unknown material for me.

I'm not dissing cosplayers, I'm just appaled that someone with AIDS would go into the porn business. People with aids = no sex, because then another person would have AIDS. Unless they already had AIDS...but then they would pass it on to their children, and that would be bad, too. Aids is bad... I don't think she had aids - the eulogy said that she died of a seizure and she did charity work for people with aids. Nowhere does it say that she herself had aids. Oh, and i don't think she was a porn-star either.

random guy replied to Alpha's topic in Gossip Café [/offtopic]
No, I think they just look weird because they are probably display models only (this computer wouldn't have actually worked because otherwise it would be what computers look like now). -
Why's absolutely no-one in the irc channel?
