  1. Actually the swastika is a mirror image of the buddhist symbol - Hitler stole it from the buddhists as some sort of irony, i think - the 'swastikas' used by the chinese therefore are reversed
  2. Good. I'm glad someone agrees with me! I can understand the generation shock our parents' went through. Think how different things will have seemed to them when we were teens! Although that means I'm tempted to lock myself in my room with WinUAE and AIAB, I must admit to being curious as to how different the games (and the gaming industry) will become in the NEXT 20 years. I mean, if things have progressed from Pong to DoomIII (etc) in 20 or so years, imagine the changes to come!
  3. I'm glad you guys agree...and I agree with what you said about 3DR as well (DNF is the perfect example). Also, if you ask me, this way of doing things is more successful because 3DR's games are often more complete and better quality for the extra time spent programming them. I was really disillusioned with what happened to Sierra because when I was a kid and addicted to 16-colour text adventure games (ie Space Quest 1,2,3; Leisure Suit Larry 1,2,3; Qest For Glory 1&2) I used to dream of going to work for Sierra because it seemed like the perfect company to work for - it was a family company. Ken Williams (the founder and husband of Roberta Williams, the author of the King's Quest series) even appeared in some of the games, for instance (like at the end of lsl1 where he comes out and tells you about Sierra). But then it became about the $$$. Even Sierra, who got famous for its adventure games, stopped making adventure games. I mean we owe them a great debt for Half Life, don't get me wrong, but once Sierra and LucasArts stopped making adventure games, it was the death-knell for the entire adventure gaming industry. Can you guys think of one decent "traditional" point and click adventure game that has been on the market in the last 4 years? *sigh* my favourite genre of games died when Sierra and LucasArts stopped making adventure games. That's why I had such hope for S&M2, and I still have hope for LSL:MCL, but we'll have to wait and see if that is any good, and how well it sells.
  4. Okay, the bids are getting too high for me. I withdraw.
  5. What the HELL has happened to lucasarts lately? I went to their website to see if there was any news on the cancelled "sam and max 2" game - looks like its still cancelled, but worse still, if you look in their games section 5/6ths of the games they're hyping at the moment are STAR WARS games. I mean its rediculous there are about 12 on the board! How can they justify making STAR WARS after STAR WARS game and not save a couple of lousy bucks for finishing Sam and Max 2!?! This was the company, that along with Sierra, practically CREATED the adventure game industry: Monkey Island 1,2,3,4, the Dig, Full Throttle, LOOM, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Maniac Mansion and its excellent sequel, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, and of course the original Sam & Max, were ALL made by Lucasarts! And now all they're doing is milking the STAR WARS franchise! Sierra is guilty of the same crimes, but at least they intend to release "Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude". I can only hope that this title will be the rebirth of the adventure game industry, just like "Sam & Max 2" was supposed to be, and now will never get a chance to be. I've also heard the game was pretty much finished. Instead of just letting the project go to waste and rot, why not touch it up a little and release it as a Freeware game, to reward (and hopefully win back a few of) the customers they have now LOST with their capitalistic, money-the-only-goal change in business practices.
  6. Okay i've been reliving my love of adventure games lately, and I thought i'd review the ones I just finished. In my view it is a terrible shame that nobody is making REAL adventure games anymore. By that I mean 2D, point-and-click games with outlandish and obscure puzzles and often alot of disparaging humour at the player's expense thrown in. These games were all made in the 1990s. Also they are all available at http://www.the-underdogs.org Ace Ventura This, as the name suggests, is based on the "ace ventura: pet detective" movies. More accurately, it is based on the cartoons that were based on the game. The same guy that did the voices for the cartoons did the movie (and he sounds ALOT like Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura). The plot-line is as would be expected; you have to save animals from evil injustices. The game is clearly designed for kids, but is entertaining nonetheless. The puzzles are simple as expected for a kids game, but some parts require lateral thinking. Despite its simplicity its amusing to click through the game - its like watching one of the movies. There are also a few jokes that were obviously aimed at older players: surprisingly, there's something of a sex scene (although it's described as 'eskimo kissing', and reference to enemas. The only thing marring this game is the action sequences, which are simple but can be annoying, but may be entertaining for kids. Overall, this is a fun game to play, especially if you liked the movies. But be warned: this game is BUGGY. Score: 6/10 (lost.5 of a mark for bugs) Beavis and Butthead: Virtual Stupidity Another game based on a cartoon, this game is a must for anyone who is a fan of the 'beavis and butthead' series. The thing that gives this game its uniqueness is that all the backgrounds and all the in/game movies are hand-drawn in the same design as the cartoons. Better yet, once you reach your TV, you can listen through a number of video clips from hard-rock/heavy metal acts to which Beavis and Butthead have lent their unique commentary - just like in the TV series! The plot involves beavis and butt-head skipping school in an attempt to join Todd's gang. The puzzles are nothing special still, but the game is definitely more difficult than 'Ace Ventura', and there are a few stumpers. All the favourites from the show show up: Todd and his gang, Daria, the hippie teacher, the insane principal. The only difference I noticed is that for some reason the classic MetallicA and AC/DC t-shirts are gone, and replaced with generic heavy-metal sayings. The best part of this game is that it is littered with the same humour as the tv series, and the fmv in-game sequences are fun to watch. This game also has mini-games, they're not that fun, but they'll while away a few minutes. Overall, this is a must play if you like Beavis and Butthead, and a should-play if you like old-school adventure games. Score: 7/10 (add 2 if you are an avid fan of the TV series) The Gene Machine This is probably the longest game from this list, and the closest to a traditional adventure. The complex storyline, set in Victorian London, begins when a talking cat turns up at your appartment, telling you about The Evil Doctor Disney ( ) and his gene machine that can combine 2 animals' DNA. You, as one of Her Majesty's Secret Agents (like a pre-james bond kind of thing) must stop this man from taking over the world (insert evil laugh here). It is the storyline that is this game it's credit, as it will take you to the moon, the lost city of Atlantis, and the high seas, as well as letting you explore Victorian London at the start. This game is littered with historical references (eg you have a conversation with "Jimmy the Ripper" and encourage him to "clean up the streets"; when a professor drags you to the moon in search of cheese, you tell him "you'll find Americans on the moon before you find cheese!"), the jokes can be cheesy but overall it is a fun game, well worth playing for its storyline. The puzzles are mixed: you'll find a few stumpers, a few medium-hard ones and a few easy ones. Overall, although it is the longest game of the 3, it is still a little short for my tastes though. Score: 7.5 (.5 extra for its good storyline) Edit: I know these games aren't played on emulators, but hey, we all like PC games too, right?
  7. I bid $3.75 (also, I have to exchange my money to US currency, so I may end up paying FIVE WHOLE DOLLARS for that bid )
  8. Hmm... Cartoons (comedy) Duckman, Family Guy, the Simpsons, Futurama, Dr Katz. Cartoons (kiddy) Ghostbusters (the ORIGINAL series), TMNT, Rugrats, the Tick, Spongebob Squarepants Cartoons (anime) Excel Saga, Ranma 1/2, Aeon Genesis Evangellion, Sailor Moon (don't laugh ) Cartoons (other) The Maxx (a cult MTV animation), Aeon Flux (ditto), Fritz the Cat (actually, that's an animated movie, it's kind of an R rated version of Felix the Cat!) Comedy Seinfeld, a bunch of Australian stuff you guys wouldn't know, Red Dwarf, The Brittas empire (starring Chris Barrie, aka Rimmer from Red Dwarf), Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Awful Truth (ie Mike Moore's show) Sci Fi/Horror X-Files, Millenium Drama I sometimes find myself watching Law And Order That's about it...damn, I watch a lot of cartoons! Oh and, keeping up appearances was cool, but I wouldn't count it as one of the best tv shows ever)
  9. I have to tell you guys about this website I found. It's http://www.movieflix.com. There are ALOT of movies on that site. you can sign up for free but out of the 'mainstream' movies, the only 'free' ones you can watch are the REALLY old (ie 1930's) movies. But that's not why I like it, if you sign up you get free access to ALL the 'indie' films (16 PAGES worth of them!!! ). I've seen 2 so far: '20 dollar hooker' and 'bathroom boardroom', and they've both been HILARIOUS! If you like low-budget, independent films as much as I do, you HAVE to check out this site And the best thing is there are two choices for streaming: Narrowband and Broadband, so I'm guessing that means even you 56kers can watch them!
  10. He might give you a lovely warning to stop spamming, or a priceless temp-ban, but that's about it
  11. I still don't understand: will GC have to pay the costs of the extra bandwidth or is it just the DJs' bandwidths that gets used?
  12. That's a well-designed site using paint! How can your sister draw like that, when she's just 12? She's a child-prodigy!
  13. Whoa!! And you can do all this with just working 3 days a week?! Or are you not telling us that you're the son of a millionare, or perhaps married to some rich gal? Well...he IS a printer. Maybe he just prints money whenever it runs out
  14. But yet, the theads held a meaning to a certain someone. But did those threads have any meaning to the rest of us, I'm not sure. Well: they had a meaning for me...and the meaning was this --->
  15. it was a good idea though, are there any more tournaments happening?
  16. Yokozuna : The pinnacle of active Sumo, this is the rank of grand champion. Only 65 men have held this rank. (from http://www.usadojo.com/sumoterms.htm )
  17. But I spent most of my time on my Amiga 500 at that time. I had ad various points a master system, a mega-drive (genesis) and a SNES, but I had HUNDREDS of games for my A500. That's because the guy I got it from and bought games from was a software pirate (and a heroin addict) unbeknownst to us at the time - so everytime I went over there to buy a game he'd give me a dozen or so games for free. Aah, those were the days.
  18. I'm twenty years old and I already feel like this is not my world anymore. As Grampa (Abe) Simpson said, "I used to be with it. Then they changed what it was. Now what i'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you!" I feel like an old man when I go to malls, because I am shocked at certain things, such as the clothes prepubescent girls are wearing these days! And 12 year-olds with make-up on! And how damn commercialistic this world is becoming. I hardly ever listen to music recorded later than the 1990s. Most of what passes for 'music' these days is appalling! But I suppose my friends and I never really fitted in with the whole pop-culture thing even when we were growing up, so its no great surprise that this new pop-culture seems so alien to me. Also with all this new technology, society is moving really fast. Good example: most of us are 'second generation' gamers. We grew up with NESs and Sega Master Systems, then moved on through the SNES/Genesis, N64/Saturn/PSX Dreamcast/GameCube/PS2 (delete where inapplicable). Therefore we remember when games didn't have fancy graphics, so to be good, they needed a good story line and an engaging system of gameplay. By contrast, 'third-generation' gamers grew up only with Next-Generation systems (ie psx-onwards) so they expect dynamite graphics, often at the cost (I feel) of gameplay and storyline. Unfortunately, it is to 'third-gen' gamers that most new software developers are targeting their games to, at a great cost to the gaming industry. Dammit! I need to get me a cane and some old-man-pants. Then I can shake my cane at people and say 'you damn kids! in MY day...'
  19. He he, do I detect a note of sarcasm in that post? Oh well, I tried. Interesting fact that I got from Eddie Izzard, a British transvestite stand-up comedian; did you know most transvestites prefer women? Most transvestites are heterosexual guys who simply like dressing up in high-heels and dresses. i could see where it could cause some problems, but then again there'd be more avenues for bonding with your girlfriend: going shopping together would take on a whole new meaning (Violence, I wasn't calling you a transexual, by the way! )
  20. Metrosexuality is the new sexual revolution! I think what it originally meant was that you are open to any and all sexual encounters (like a kind of extreme bi-sexuality) but nowadays it more replies to guys who dress snappily, maybe put on some make-up etc... You know, like the whole 'queer eye for the straight guy' thing. You're still completely hetero, but you like the look of yourself in leather pants, or something like that. I dunno, I can't really explain it myslef, mainly because I don't really understand it - I have no fashion sense or range, every day I wear black jeans and a t-shirt of some sort (usually with bands on them).
