No plans for conscription in the US, huh?

Let's try to avoid flaming here folks.. I understand the point you're trying to make, and mine was that it's the people drawing these out as "ethicallities" who are usually on the slippery slope, not the people doing these things. The ice cream list "incident" happened 20 years ago, and we haven't slid any nearer to a draft yet. The DMV thing seems perfectly reasonable when viewed objectively, it's only when you start drawing unsupportable paranoid conclusions that it nears a slippery slope. Fear Selective Services, hate Selective Services, I'm right there with ya. Avoid a draft if they ever do one, and I'll meet you for a beer on the other side of the border. But in the meantime, fight the fight with reason and facts, not paranoia and slippery slopes that do more to disqualify your beliefs than support them. And that's the end of what I'm going to say on that. -
Tekken's had this kind of mode included since.. I think part 3? They've gotten a little more elaborate over time, but usually feature a few different enemy types and the basic tekken combat moved to a final-fight style beat 'em up. Sucks that this one will be just one character (you used to be able to pick whoever) but it's nice that they're doing a little extra for it.

I played it for a bit too a few days ago, and it basically felt like a crappier version of GGXX. 4 players just weren't meant for a traditional 2D fighter in that way, especially not with a turn around button. And using the turn around button for dashing was even worse, because it makes it harder to turn on the run.

What young men turning 18 recieve from Selective Service is a "Mailback Reminder Card." As outlined here, from the selective service site, SS uses a wide range of lists to come up with the names of recipients. The ice cream list would have supplemented these existing lists. Between these lists, SS manages to mail a LOT of reminder cards. Now, do you honestly think that their 94% statistic does not include people who get reminder cards? I would be willing to bet that those cards go out to more than 6% of 18 year olds in a given year. Nevermind that we're comparing a modern statistic to a story that's 20 years old. Or that our statistics aren't the important part of the previous argument. Anyway, I tire of it too. If you wish to continue I might, but only if it's good. -
Soul Calibur II on PS2. Talim is the brest.

Ah ok, I see where you're coming from. That would be right if the army's statistic (94%) refers only to people who sign up without recieving reminder letters. However, just about everyone gets those reminder letters as they're turning 18, so those people are probably included in the 94% statistic. -
Did an answer ever come through on this? Now I'm curious, because I couldn't find anything on google.

IxI SoNiK IxI is right, Anandtech rocks, but it's a little tough to sift through all the information if you don't know what you're looking for. I recommend Directron.com and NewEgg.com for parts. If you're in a state where one charges tax and the other doesn't, the non-tax one will usually be cheaper. And even with Tax they're some of the lowest prices out there on most stuff. Are you looking to built a specific type of machine? Like a really tricked out one with lights and stuff, or a silent running machine (you'd be surprised how nice that is), or just a simple browse the web and play games machine, or a hardcore powerful rig, etc?

The several hundred trillion or whatever at the beginningof this thread probably wouldn't have been worth investing, since it was so much. 1 Million, however, almost has to be invested to really enjoy it these days. Let's put it this way - you could go crazy for a year or two on 1 Mil, or you could invest it and live the rest of your life on it if you play your cards right.

SVC, Killed Capcom vs. SNK or made it betta?
Daeval replied to Lucandrake's topic in Arcade Emulators [/pc/arcade]
I haven't heard anything about EA vs. Capcom, only EA vs. Marvel. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> EA Vs Marvel?!? Who are they going to put? Zidane Vs Spiderman? Kill Hulk by doing a volley? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Seriously, what 'fighters' does EA have? WTF are they thinking? (Yes, we've discussed about this before too). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, this was kind of the reaction when the deal was made too. Everyone at my old work pictured Madden vs. Marvel. -
Do you guys think this is unconstintutial?
Daeval replied to Lucandrake's topic in Gossip Café [/offtopic]
Yeah, that list is right. You could try to track by IP, as I think most petition sites do, but I doubt anyone higher up is going to take that kind of tracking seriously. -

And you've ignored the whole reason I brought up the knee-jerk reaction the entire time - how is it some terrible thing that the ss would be "soliciting for customers" only to do what they're legally required to do anyway? Aside from a knee-jerk emotional reaction to the ss, I see no reason. You haven't been able to logically argue around that yet. The article states that the list was of 167,000 18-year-olds-to-be, not 120,000. Since ALL 167,000 are "supposed to sign up to the selective service," and the army is claiming 94% of all who are supposed to do so actually sign up, the best number you could get out of this rather rough application of statistics would be that 156,980 of the 167,000 people on the list signed up. That's a lot more than 7,000. And then to assume that none of these 156,980 people would have done what was legally required of them if they hadn't gotten a letter sent by ss through this ice cream list.. is just ridiculous! People are going to hear about it through their friends who are likely also turning 18. From their family members and other adults who might have served or who, at the very least, had to sign up themselves when they were 18. Many of them are going to already be in the ss mailing database somewhere, whether from DMV records, financial aid applications, possibly school records or even relations with military recruiters. There is no way to tell how many of the 156,980 people would not have heard about the ss if it weren't for this particular mailing list, but I'm willing to bet it's a hell of a lot less than 7,000. Maybe your math went right over my head, in which case I'd like you to spell it out, but these numbers sound rather erroneous.. Even if they are correct, we come back to the fact that your 7,000 people would be commiting a crime that could destroy their future in this country and is arguably unfair to their fellow countrymen. I never ruled it out, in fact, I agree with your concerns about SS, I just don't like your methods. I never meant any of this as a personal attack on you, you're still cool as far as I'm concerned, I get fired up over stuff too. It's just when an important world/national issue like this is at stake, I see no room for this kind of rhetorical argument. -
ah, I see, didn't mean to be a plick or anything.

Isn't there a "no blatantly advertising your board/forum" rule here? Ah yes, here it is.. Maybe it doesn't apply, I dunno..

yeah well, only if the get a permission from Marvel. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Capcom lost the Marvel lisence, as I recall. I think it belongs to EA now. This means we probably won't be seeing any more marvel fighters along the now classic lines laid by Capcom. -
When I was a kid, I read a lot of comics, and almost exclusively Marvel. Their characters just had a better feel than their only real rivals at the time, DC. Some of my favorites were Dark Hawk, Spider Man (mostly The Amazing), and the New Warriors. Most of the recent Marvel stuff that I've seen has been kind of for a younger-than-I-am audience. 1602 was kinda cool, but it wasn't the same as reading a plain ol' Marvel superhero book. I started reading the Ultimates, and that didn't seem too bad, but I didn't keep it up. If anyone has any suggestions on new Marvel stuff, I'd be willing to revisit my first love in comics. Like Sultan, I've since come to appreciate more. The recent GI Joe series by Devil's Due is pretty good. Lone Wolf 2100 by Dark Horse was unique and interesting. I might like some of Vertigo's stuff if they'd taken more of a cue from Sandman (which was friggin' awesome), but they seem to have followed in Preacher's (which was ok) footsteps instead. DC's has done a lot of awesome stuff with Batman that I might have otherwise missed, including Hush and Year One. I've even found some indy stuff that I dig, like ATI/Planetlar's Foot Soldiers (maybe out of print by now).

I'm not sure we could scrounge 2000 over-18 signatures here, could we? And do we, an emulation site, really want to be representin' in congress? There's got to be a petition online somewhere already? It's a noble pursuit, I'm just not sure 1emu is the place. -
No one trusts ol' Daeval.. Told ya it woulda been fraud.

It's interesting that they lift forums and IRC servers open. Anyone see if they had f-serves up with torrents or anything like that? Or if they went "legit?"

Daeval replied to random guy's topic in Gossip Café [/offtopic]
Ok, that's fair, we're starting to think critically it looks like... Now, how does this lead to your conclusion? Should non-business organizations not have the same right to publicly traded lists as businesses do? Or is it just selective services who should be specifically not-included? Are you sure this isn't just an attempt to justify your emotional reaction to selective services? -

Well, if the Information Broker had done what it was supposed to, then the proprietor of the store would have had the chance to decline the offer... But, and I re-iterate now... How is a simple reminder letter from the army any different from an advertisement from another company to the end recipient?... Well... The only difference I can see, and the same one you have paraphrased, is that people have an emotional attachment - in the form of hatred - that causes them to react violently to the words "selective service," regardless of context. My point all along has been that that kind of emotional reaction alone is not good reasoning, and using it to further demonize things is a form of deceptive rhetoric, plain and simple. -

As a former employee of a local ISP that dealt with its fair share of spammers, this reeks of BS: There's a really simple solution to this, and either someone is completely ignorant on the issue, is being paid off, or was misrepresented in this article. It goes like this.. The act of recieving junk mail to your account does not occur at the physical location of the end user's machine. It happens at your ISP. The offending mail is "physically" recieved by your account at the location of your ISP's POP3 server machine. You are then free to "pick it up" from wherever you are. Think of it like a post-office box. If I have a post-office box in Maryland, and someone sends junk mail to that post-office box, and junk mail is illegal in Maryland, then that person has commited a crime. If I have a magical device that allows me to read the contents of my post-office box from outside the state's borders, that still doesn't change the fact that the recieving address of the offending letter is in Maryland. After what we've looked at above, if the recieving ISP's server is located in Maryland, then the "commerce" has "entered Maryland," no bones about it, and both the ISP and the end user should be able to sue. Update: HAH! I checked out a little more info on this stuff, and the law student that initiated this suit (the one fighting AGAINST spam), did it based on emails recieved to this site: http://www.maryland-state-resident.com That site covers pretty much all the bases. It outlines left and right that anyone on the recieving end of the email is in Maryland. To say that junk mail to that domain is commerce that "might never enter Maryland" is moronic. That judge should be lynched by a CAT5 cable.
