  1. True that the DVDs are easier for fans, but I like this because it exposes them to people who may not have seen them. I haven't given Inayusha a chance yet (mostly because it looks at first glance like every other sword-wielding fuzzy-eared anime out ther, none of which I'm big on), but Cowboy Bebop and Metropolis, from what I've heard, could edumacate some people about the potential of anime (and animation in general) as a medium for serious storytelling. I'm all about preaching the virtues of alternative media.
  2. Agreed, Twisted Metal is more like deathmatch with cars. Burnout doesn't even have weapons. Edit: Nevermind, you updated mid-post. Yeah, they're good for car-based carnage. I'd hesitate to compare them to burnout though, they're both good in their own ways.
  3. Then Burnout 3 is tailormade for you... and for me too. Awesome bullet-time-like moments. After liking GT3 so much, I was surprised to find that I got a huge kick out of Burnout 2. Burnout 3 looks to be that much more of the same crunchy goodness.
  4. How does it suck? Last I heard the game had excellent gameplay. It depends on what you're looking for in a racer. If you're looking for an arcade racer, the GT series is definately not for you. I'm not going to say it's "realistic" (although it probably is, relatively speaking), but I liked it because it added a level of depth to racing that most other games didn't give me. Before GT3, I'd never played a racer that made me think about the effects of engine placement, or taking turns from the outside-in, or how I wanted to tweak my camber for that extra help on a certain track. But things like that made GT3 a deeper challenge for me than any other racer I'd played, and kept my interest far longer than any of the "go fast, then powerslide, then boost when you have it" racers I was used to. It made me learn "the line," and how that line changes for differently tuned cars, a LOT more than any other racer. And that's not going to be everybody's cup of tea.
  5. by GT4 you mean Gran Turismo 4, and not Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas right? I'm guessing yes, they meant Gran Turismo 4, since I've seen the "no online after all" announcement for that game elsewhere. This sucks, but if GT3 was any indication, I'll get far more than my $50 worth even without online play.
  6. You have duckman and a relatively obscure school-girl character in your post. I think we're calling the kettle black.
  7. Oh.. crazy.. He's supposed to be the same ninja? I may have to check that game out after all. yes it is. Yeah, for most ppl that took like a hour or a few days to figure that out. For some it was easier cause the Ninja Gaiden and DOA games are by Tecmo Yeah, I've never played DoA so I had nothing to go on.
  8. Oh.. crazy.. He's supposed to be the same ninja? I may have to check that game out after all.
  9. Alright, here's my list: Capcom ====== Ken (Signature) Rose (Signature) Guile (Signature) Alex (Signature) Birdie (Big) T. Hawk (Grapple) BB Hood (Charge) Ibuki (Speed) Hsien-Ko (Unusual) Hayato (Mid-Boss) [Rival Schools] M. Bison (Final Boss) [NOT the boxer!] Lilith Akira [Rival Schools] Strider Adon Shoma [Rival Schools] Dudley Sakura SNK === Mai (Signature) Robert (Signature) Kyo (Signature) Rock (Signature) Shigen (Big) Kevin (Grapple) Bob Wilson (Charge) Hanzo (Speed) Whip (Unusual) Billy Kane (Mid-Boss) [You didn't think I'd leave him out? ] Orochi Iori (Final Boss) King May Lee Sho [breakers] Mudman Rody Birts [AOF3] Amano Galford I like that both of your lists avoid over-using the more common characters. This speaks volumes. Heck, I'm not even sure who some of those characters are. Edit: I might spare Shoma for an updated version of Dee Jay.. I'm torn...
  10. Is he in any fighting games? I ask because If so I'd like to see him, not to be a punk.
  11. I was going to allow these, but really only because I like D. Dark. We'll hold to this then. Oh yeah, and the megaman power battle games don't count either. As that would open up a ton of megaman bosses that don't really fight like fighter chars.
  12. This might have been done here before, but I haven't seen it so why the heck not. It's just for fun, and it's all opinion, so please no flames or "heated debates" over anyone's list or the rules, etc. All this talk about CFJ and NGBC lately has stirred up something I've thought about for a while. Here goes nothing: come up with your own Capcom vs. SNK roster! Here are some really simple guidelines to keep it interesting, and to make sure we start on the same page, please try and stick with these in this thread: A few rules: 1) All characters must have previously appeared as a combatant in a 1 on 1 (or 3 vs 3, etc) fighting game, including up to CFJ and NGBC. This does NOT mean side scrollers or beat 'em ups, etc. They have to have been playable or computer controlled in a pure fighting game. 2) 2D AND 3D fighters count. 3D characters are assumed to be made over like Kyosuke, etc. 3) No Marvel characters on the Capcom side. 4) Only one version of any given character. No "Super" or "Evil" versions, etc. 5) This is purely a dream match, with no pretense for story, etc. Time period, etc does not matter. Characters from different games are assumed to be play-balanced so they work in the same game. The Roster: 18 Characters per side The roster can be made up however you like, but each side must have at least: 4 Signature Characters 1 Big Character (Just physically large, like Zangief, Raiden, Hugo, etc) 1 Grapple Character 1 Charge Character (Like Blanka, Ash, etc) 1 Agility/Speed Character (Like Rolento, Nakoruru, Spanish Ninja, etc) 1 "Unusual" Character (In how they play, not their design.. Like Dhalsim, Guy, Vice etc) 1 Mid Boss Character (Can be anyone, doesn't have to be an old boss. Can't have more than 1) 1 Final Boss Character (Can be anyone, doesn't have to be an old boss. Can't have more than 1) You can have more than the specified number in any category except Mid and Final Boss. I'll leave it up to you to decide who fits what categories. A single character can cover multiple categories; Big Character and Grapple Character, for example. Even if you use one category per character, you still have 7 characters per side to choose any way you like. Put any categories after the character listing, like so: Ken (Signature) Guile (Signature, Charge) Dan Hugo (Big, Grapple) E. Honda etc etc.. That's it, I'll post mine in a bit. I don't know if anyone's going to take the time to do this but if you do, be creative and have fun!
  13. Way Kramer. Not much of a seinfeld fan but that guy rocks.
  14. My vote went to Other for Kage from VF. Ibuki would have been a close second, but she's a schoolgirl and that brings her down a notch. And if you don't like the poll, try to remember it's just for fun, and start your own poll if you're really opposed to it. Don't just flame on all of a sudden if you don't like the choices. :\
  15. Yeah, I know he's the main character and all, and it's a matter of opinion, but I think they could make the "just for fun" jam games like this one (and CFJ, and the vs games) more fun by including more of the characters that don't get a lot of spotlight otherwise. Just to increase the variety a bit, within the game and between it and other games. I realize this probably wouldn't be the popular opinion, however. See, this is what I'm talkin' about. It's a matter of opinion though. In all honesty, they did a pretty good job of all that with this game. Including the World Heroes people (even if they aren't the most "different" from that game), tung fu rue, the mechanical gorilla, etc, is pretty cool imo.
  16. I liked that they're remaking Altered Beast, but the storyline instantly turned me off to it. It's your typical "biological experiment gone wrong." I think there's even some "top-secret military" stuff in there. I swear that's like the default storyline for when you run out of money for a writer, or for anyone with a single creative bone in their body.
  17. It's like an OG King of Fighters without the haughty "story" pretense... I kind of like it... I would have chosen the lizard over Cyber Woo, but meh, it's cool that someone from KOTM is in there. Kyo, Hoamaru and Iori I'm sort of meh about. They're staples so, in a way, they have to be there, but they're trite at this point. Rock doesn't bother me as much since he hasn't been in EVERYTHING yet. Kaede doesn't get this caveat because about half of the other fighters from his game are far more unique.
  18. each TYME ppl tell me "well if you hate america so much why don't you just get the fuuck out!?" and I tell them "I'm workin' on it!!" I don't understand people that dont like FREEDOM I'm not going to get into this, because it's flame bait, but basically, "Freedom" isn't pivotal in a lot of the crap that goes on here in the US.
  19. I'm extremely picky about my anime, so my collection is pretty reserved.. US Release DVD: Cowboy Bebop Series (Complete + a redundant best-of I got as a gift) Cowboy Bebop the Movie (AKA Knockin' On Heaven's Door) Furi Kuri Series (Complete) Princess Mononoke I also have Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away in the original Japanese VHS releases. Before I even knew who Miyazaki was, my relatives in Japan sent the Mononoke VHS (in Japanese, no sub, no dub) when it was released in Japan. My grandmother (my stateside link to the japanese side of my family) and I didn't know what to make of it. A few years later, one of my (Japan native) Japanese professors made a big deal out of how Miyazaki is a huge name in Japan, and it finally made sense. My relatives ask us to send them all the new releases by the big names stateside (Spielberg's big stuff, etc), so this must have been their version of same. When Spirited Away came out, they sent that too.
  20. Did any of you read all that stuff that Penny Arcade linked to a long time ago about this thing? Supposedly the mastermind behind it has a long history of "phantom" business that would suddenly go bankrupt after lots of investors had put money into them, and somehow he was living quite well. I don't remember exactly, but it was fishy. At any rate, these guys had a pretty big fancy booth at E3, though I didn't get a chance to really check them out. I have to agree with everyone else though, this thing screams N-Gage to me.
  21. I found my score humorous, and perhaps not entirely innaccurate...
  22. The backgrounds in NGBC look extremely nice, but the characters look almost humorously low-res. And I don't remember the backgrounds in KOF '94 looking as hideous as they do in Rebout.. The characters are whatever, but the backgrounds are hideous. Are those the old ones?
  23. Aren't you the one that started the "what are we teaching our kids" thread? I would assume by that thread that you'd learned the error of your ways, but you're still willing to laugh about this kind of utter BS. Not sure what to think...
  24. It actually blocks ranges, which is a more feasable method. However, if somebody gets blocked on one range, that may just make you a bigger target, and it wouldn't be THAT hard to do it from another range. A little harder than another IP, but not impossible by any means.
  25. I was thinking about this earlier, and I don't know if it's actually relevant at all, but I thought I'd toss it up here and see what you folks have to say... I've taken a lot of mythology and art history courses, and it seems like, throughout recorded history (through language or art), cultures all over the world have been entertained by stories and characters that embody the virtues of their culture, in one way or another. Tribal stories tell of powerful hunters and other people, mythological or otherwise, who provide for the people in a variety of ways, or punish those who harm the tribe. The heroes, villians, and other characters of Greek mythology act out a wide range of stories which, though some might be questionable by today's standards, reward the virtues and punish the evils of that time and place. Even the modern comic-book superhero, whether it's the all-american Superman of the early 40s or the more lost and underdog "generation-x" hero of the late 80's and early 90's, reflects the values and troubles of the time. So, if this is the case, where are we now? Who are the heroes that reflect our mainstream virtues? The gun-toting action hero? The gold-clad, drug-abusing, womanizing rapper? Just a brief brain-dump. Discuss as you like.
