  1. Paul's moves in Tekken 1 weren't very judo, but that's what Namco said his fighting style was. And no you couldn't put judo in a fighting game without adding some "out of place" striking attacks. Even a wrestling game would need some punchs and kicks. Creating a character on a fighting game with ONLY throws and holds would be a terrible idea. A wrestler in a fighting game still has to use basic fighting game tactics (Punch combos, guarding and jumping on a downed opponent etc etc) but only adds certain wrestling moves that would work in the principles of a fighting game. If Wolf could only do wrestling moves and had to pin or make his opponent submit to win, then he would be a ridiculously crap character to play as. It's the same as a proper judo fighter. If he only had throws that truly represented the sport they would be grapples attempting to force the opponent over to try and score 'waza-ari's and 'ippon's it wouldn't work as the opponent (say a boxer or karate fighter) wouldn't have the same objectives, they wouldn't be able to counter and bash buttons to try to push him over instead. Characters such as wrestling or judo can only be loosely represented, and paul's representation was as loose as is possible. the fighting styles in Tekken today are still mish-mashes of styles and don't reflect any true disciplines. First off, you contradicted yourself about Paul's style and the official word. You said in your previous post that manuals were crap, now you're saying that the "official" word is the basis for calling a style Judo that is "as loose as is possible" a representation. If the styles are only loosely represented AND "You should never listen to manuals," why insist that he uses Judo, just because that's what the "official" word is, when his moves clearly represent something else (8-way fist, other chinese arts) far more closely? Secondly, about accurate Judo, a clarification of my last paragraph in the previous post... What you see in the olympics is the sport of judo, but Judo was not developed as a sport. It turned into that over time. It was designed as a self-defense art combining aspects of other arts. Having learned several styles in his time, the creator (Jigoro Kano) was not ignorant enough to ignore strikes as a vital part of self defense. However, his focus was on disabling an opponent quickly and without causing permanent damage. The idea was that this was better accomplished with throws, locks, and chokes. For this reason, the more "risky" striking techniques were only taught to very high level students, who were thought to have the self-control to use them carefully in practice and wisely in application. When western wrestlers came along and started pinning judokas, pins were introduced and the sport of judo wasn't far off. Nowadays, very few schools teach the original striking techniques, as nearly every school trains for the sport, where these are not used. Knowing all that, it would be simple enough to create a traditional fighting game character who used Judo WITH the original striking techniques (assuming one of the designers could research them). Since fighting game characters don't typically pull their punches, it would make sense that a Judo based character used ALL of Judo, not just the techniques used in sport. This would NOT make them an innacurate representation of Judo, though they would be an innaccurate representation of the sport of judo. There is a distinction there. This is why Goh's style is sometimes listed as "Judo (with Atemi-Waza)." Edit: Sorry, don't mean to sound flamey or anything, I just got the impression that you were ignoring a lot of what was said. Maybe I was unclear the first time. Again, no hard feelings, just a clarification.
  2. That's just silly. Of course people are going to have other favorites. Even if any one of us was some infallible judge of "main" videogame characters, it's ridiculous to think that everybody's favorites would always be covered there. Why should people compromise their tastes just to vote in a poll that's only for fun anyway? Maybe somebody LIKED the Star Trek armor? I sure as heck didn't, but I thought plain ol' King was pretty boring too. That doesn't mean it's an invalid choice.
  3. I don't know why you all are bashing on this thing.. Clearly, it runs Half Life 2 very well: And Doom 3 looks as good as ever:
  4. I didn't get it from the manual. You should never listen to manuals. Half of the time they're written by the stupid morons who published the game rather than the ones who developed it. Anyway, his original style wasn't anything like Akira's Hakkyoku-ken. They only added moves (rip-offs) such as his iron mountain lean in an attempt to copy Akira later on in the series (3 onwards). He then took on the role as the rough 'powerhouser' of the series, just like Akira always has been in Virtua Fighter. (and now Namco are saying they want to add that style again (powerful rough-housing) but with an Asian rather than American, with Feng Wei, man they seriously wished they created Akira...) Namco's original naive character designs didn't stick to any fighting styles that actually existed, the closest thing to Paul's style was Judo, so I'm sticking to it. Oh, and you won't have seen any Judoka do most of Goh Hinogami's moves either (again, other than his throws) and he uses out-and-out Judo. Judo could never be represented as it really is in a fighting game, only in a Judo game. Heed these words - "You can't make an omelette (fighting game) without breaking some eggs (giving judo characters roundhouses and leaping high-kicks)" I'll have to play Tekken 1 again, but I remember his main moves always being forward-palm like. It has been a while though. And Goh uses Judo with the Atemi-waza (strikes) included, which are not typically taught to people who are learning for sport. What he does is fairly accurate in that it's mostly reserved, designed to deliver what would be a quick warding blow or get the opponent off of you. His highest kick that I can recall is just a lead-in into a takedown that would be over-powering if it was a single move. His real damage dealers are his throws, which are accurate, with the exception of the incorporated Atemi-Waza (if you kneed someone in the gut before a Harai, you'd be out of any judo tournament). I'm not sure about the technical accuracy of Goh's Atemi-waza, as I haven't learned them, but they are more fitting to the style of "practical" Judo than Paul's heavy strikes. And yeah, Judo could be accurately represented in a fighting game. However, the SPORT of Judo could not. It is significantly different in that it is practiced to defeat other judokas who are aiming for the same thing: kazushi, throws, or pinning/chokes/locks. That works better in a wrestling game. Remember that Judo was originally developed as a general form of fighting, and also incorporated strikes and blocks. It focused on grappling techniques because they were considered the most efficient ways to disable your opponent, but that doesn't mean they were the only options available.
  5. King was a guy in tights with an animal mask. I can't think of any off the top of my head (but I'm not a big wrestling fan), but that's not exactly groundbreaking enough to attribute Tizoc's design to him as well. Tizoc has much more character, IMO. BTW, I voted for Wolf. Even though his name is backwards on the other side of his shorts.
  6. Just out of curiosity, what did you mean here? I've skinned before, but never modelled, though I am looking to start pretty soon. How would skinning increase the poly count? Do you mean he'd want to go back and increase it once he started skinning? You've broken my brain!
  7. I'm not sure which of the square people it was, if it was even one of the regulars, but the music in Secret of Mana gets randomly stuck in my head to this day. Also, the first Tenchu on PS1 has some awesome tracks. I liked what Trent Reznor did for Quake 1, though I'm not sure he counts. It wasn't great music so much as an amazing ambient soundtrack that did a lot to enhance the mood.
  8. What about that guy from Fatal Fury? Franco Bash? He was cool.
  9. Yeah, I don't know how that happened. The company that's doing it is pure indy. Grayson himself is even played by one of the two people that head the company.
  10. It's almost identical dude... Granted, I haven't played EVERY MMORPG out there, but there were a few marked differences to Morrowind's combat. I liked it more because it was some twisted combination of first-person-melee and rpg stats. Most importantly, engaging something didn't magically attach it to you with a tether. You could still manuever and it actually MEANT something. Targetting, for spells and otherwise, was actually physical targetting, not just "I have X selected, so I hit X." Stealth was more like Thief than an MMORPG, and you actually had to sneak to use a sneak attack, rather than hitting the thief class' "sneak attack" special button. I also found myself using buffs a lot less, and finding more than one way to get past something. It was typically quicker than MMORPG combat too, and never once did I camp a spawn. It felt like a lot more than "Target, hit auto-attack, use specials, wait for specials to refresh, use them again." Basically, it was much more engaging to me than most MMORPGs, in which combat feels like some kind of automated game of tug-of-war, where you get to watch and occasionally hit a button and hope that the enemy dies before your character. I'm not saying it was some huge leap, but it was a combination of little changes that made it more fun to me than any of the MMORPGs I've played. For the record, that I can remember, I've played or extended-beta'ed SWG, AC, AC2, AO, and played and even worked for EQ. It's entirely possible that I'm missing some evolutionary leap in MMORPG combat, but I'd have to see it to believe it.
  11. I just got back from a Flogging Molly concert, but this sounds interesting. I'll try it tommorow when my hearing returns. Update: 13/18, I haven't played a lot of the more obscure ones. Neat find though.
  12. I've never seen a judoka do ANY of that stuff. He might have a judo-based throw or two, but the vast majority of his moves look more like Akira from Virtua Fighters "Eight-Way Punch" or "Bear and Tiger" style. It might be what the manual says, but it's lying to you.
  13. All those things are signatures of the Elder Scroll series, minus the 13 year olds. From the bits and pieces I could make out from of the scans, they say that they are completely revamping the combat so it actuall feels fun and isn't just repetative hacking and slashing. I meant the crappy combat and 13 year olds in MMORPGs. The combat system in Morrowind wasn't anything amazing, but it wasn't as bad as most MMORPGs.
  14. Yes, he is from 4D Boxing! Do you want a Gmail invite? I already got one, thanks though!
  15. If the game looks this good and plays anything like Morrowind, with the open-endedness, the countless character options, the endless but optional backstory books, and the unique MMORPG-like world without the crappy combat or annoying 13 year olds... I'm going to have to change my pants every time I play.
  16. If they could make MMORPG combat feel anywhere near as epic and heroic as those cinema sequences, or those boobs, they've got my 12 bucks a month. Otherwise, buy me the artbook and throw the game on the pile.
  17. Is Larry from 4D boxing? My "other" vote goes to Wade Hixton or the Raver Girl from the same game.
  18. It IS an indy film. heh. It's being done by an indy company. As far as I can tell, WB/DC didn't do much for them. On the one hand, the costumes and props are only marginally better than cosplay and the acting looks atrocious. On the other hand, it's cool that the nazi WB would let an indy company run with something like this. I feel odd saying this, but I hope it does not get a wide release. This would make a great straight-to-dvd indy cult hit. However, if it were to hit theatres in a big way, it could do a lot to unravel what Marvel has done with the Spiderman and X-Men films, and what DC is trying to do with the Batman Begins, taking comic-book films back down a few notches to the general public.
  19. Edit: Sorry for the double post! Got a time out and thought it didn't go through.
  20. I'd seen some australian stuff before, they rock. I'm torn on the buffalo. Is it supposed to represent the "pioneers," or the thousands of native americans we butchered or displaced to get this country?
  21. No but I got an upgrade so I could run it on my pc. But also the version I used to have installed was modded to crap anyway - I had a casino, a vampire sword, a patch to add some of the superfluous nudity from Daggerfall that was missing in Morrowind, a banking system, a real-estate system, swords like the blade sword and the gunblade from Final Fantasy 7, a newspaper addon with interview quests... and those were just some of the bigger ones! Once I got back to having to play only the core game, I lost interest. That's cool! I never really explored the mod community because I was busy playing other things when I first got the game, and didn't really get back to it until recently. I should check some of those out.
  22. Did you lose a save or something? That would suck... Restarting is only fun when you do it intentionally.
  23. It won't help with stat-building, not directly. But frankly, with the crap you could make, you won't NEED ridiculous stats. And if you really want them, you could make items that make them easier to build. If you wanted to build a combat skill, for example, you could make items that make you harder to hit, or that regenerate your health constantly. Basically, it makes stats much less of an issue, since you can make items to do pretty much anything your stats would have.
  24. I've got it and haven't noticed a difference really. Which I guess is probably a good thing. I don't use IE though, and most of the updates pertained to it.
