    Is that done from the control panel? Neither of us has ever used Vista before. I thought it could only do DRM stuff. Yeah, it's done through the control panel and, no, media playback is not exclusive to DRM. You can use winamp, media player classic, etc just as you can in XP. Don't know where you got that idea.

    vista home basic should run fine since it doesn't include aero just tell him to do the usual tweaking that would be done with xp (turning off the security center and other services) in addition to turning off defender and UAC what do you mean burn cd's and listen to music? why shouldn't it be able to?

    if you're using windows xp and later, an ntfs junction should also do the trick

    Based on the screenshots I've seen, Parted Magic is just the gparted live cd with xfce I'm not impressed also, there's JkDefrag for defragmentation on windows.

    no 32-bit OS supports 4+gB of RAM I would recommend Vista though; it's pretty good.
