about the CPS-3 dumps

Recommended Posts

I've seen the dumps of all the cps3 games and they range from 30 to 60 mb...and i know the games on cps3 are loading from a cd...so i was wondering if these dumps are the real thing or not ?!?! :thumbsup1:

Could this be that the ROMs are dumped from the CPS3's ram...when the game is already loaded and that's why they are so small ??

I'm asking cuz i wanna get them to be prepared when cps3 is emulated :D :D (10 years or so) B)

As far I I know, most of those images are bad... I don't know if it's because of the heavy encryption frying the board and fuxoring up the dump too or did it just go wrong somewhere along the way.

Eeeh...that site links to some unsavory sites. Anyway, I still couldn't find it there.

I found something that looks like the entire interview:

so here it is :clapping:

Hello razoola, can you present yourself for the rare people who don't already know you

Hi, I'm probably mostly known as the person from CPS2shock who defeated the CPS2 encryption system thus allowing Capcom's CPS-2 games to be emulated.

How did your passion for the arcade games came, and how came your idea to decrypt cps2 games ?

I grew up around the first home computers and the birth of the video game. My passion for arcades came mostly because the games one could play in the arcades were better than those on the home computer or console of that time.

When I was younger I used to ripp music from c64 games and make those demos with the flashing borders etc. From that I went on to writing computer games but after doing a few games I found that very non challenging. I started looking at CPS-2 simply for the challenge of it, if there was no challenge I would have never bothered. The actual method used to get the non-encrypted data is the result of around two and a half years of looking at the system.

Where did your nickname Razoola come from ?

Basically Razoola is my spirit name, it means 'Keeper of keys, opener of doors'.

Where did you buy your cps2 boards ?

They came from various places. Most were donated to CPS2shock and returned after, some we were allowed to keep which were then sold to raise money to cover postage and custom fees or to buy other CPS2 games. Games bought mainly came from Japan and Hong Kong.

You must have a huge collection of pcbs...

In fact I do not, at this time I have nine CPS-2 games of which 5 are dead. These belong to CPS2shock and not myself. All other games have either been returned or sold to raise cash. I also have a NeoGeo MV-1F and a kof99 cart.

Which are your favorites games or your favorite playing style currently?

My favorite game of all time is Bomb Jack and my favorite style of game is shooter. I do not like the latest shooters with what I can only call bullet kaleidoscope madness, I more like the mid 80's shooters, 1942 and Star force for example. I don't know why I liked Bomb Jack so much, but there is something about that game that makes it a classic in my view.

After the decryptage of all cps2 games, what will happen to your website ? will it remain open? and how it'll evolve ?

CPS2shock will remain open. Basically it also serves as a information site for CPS-2 hardware. It also contains manuals, instruction cards, marquees and so on for many CPS-2 games which owners of genuine CPS-2 hardware find very helpful. There is also some artwork for CPS-3 games but I don't think the site will ever expand to cover other hardware.

Many fans of the Shoot em up genre impatiantly awaits the release of the excellent "progear no arashi" edited by cave, is it possible to see it emulated any time soon?

It is possible yes, but I won't happen until the GFX and Sound data is dumped which is something I cannot do myself.

You have to receive many malls from lamers that asks for cps3 xors or roms, are you tired of that ?

I do not get many mails like these anymore, I used to about a year ago but it has died down now thankfully.

Which was your reaction of the ESA warning (Entertainment Software Association, known as IDSA in the past) one year ago ?

I did not think much of it at all, I still question if it was actually legit as various attempts to contact them myself went unanswered. The XOR's were removed at the request of Retrogamers web admin as they requested it (I respect their wishes more than the then IDSA).

Do you already had other complains from Capcom or others?

No, I did have an offer to stop XOR releases so they could then be sold with a commercial emulator but I rejected the offer as it wasn't what CPS2shock was about.

Can you tell us what happen about the xor of street fighter alpha 3

Heh that's quite a funny story actually. I actually uploaded the XOR to USENET (newsgroups) in error myself, probably because I was a little drunk I tried to remove them but it was to late so instead of making a fuss I released the XOR publicly the next day. I got many people offering me drinks in the following months

Have you been hated by gamers who plays cps2 on original hardware, because of what you did for the CPS2 emulation ?

Not at all, I did receive a few mails from people who were concerned about the newer games being released to soon though. Looking back its clear to see new games were not released early with the exception of maybe Street fighter Zero 3 which was my fault entirly. The main abuse at the time came from other emulation devs who wanted information so the actual CPS2 algo could be obtained. I did not give out this information to protect the newer CPS-2 games. The information has now however been available for some six months but so far no one has made any real headway with it. Other Abuse came from a select few people who thought I was keeping donation money for myself. Of course this was and still is untrue but I expected something like this to happen anyway.

You have released the uiverse bios and the dead phoenix for cps2, they are for gamers who play on real hardware.

I'll start with the suicide fix. Basically this was always a goal for CPS2shock and something I looked at quite often when not getting XOR's. I am very happy that I could finally find a fix dead boards which is explained on CPS2shocks suicide page. It was real stroke of luck that I managed to see what caused games not to work, it's just a pity the fixes are so time consuming to make.

The UNIVERSE BIOS started out as a small project for a friend who simply wanted a replacement BIOS where he could change region without the need of the then used 4xBIOS which used a physical switch to swap region. It quickly turned into something more when I realized there were many other functions I could add that NeoGeo users would find very handy. Apart from the region changer I think the features people like most is the ability to insert coins from the SNK joy pad and of course the built in cheat engine.

Let's speak about CPS3, we know that the main problem is the rom encoding, did you look for it yet, or will you in the next future ?

I have had a look at the CD images, I have not looked at real hardware. From examining the CD images it seems the encryption is weaker than CPS2 as patterns can be seen by simply looking at the data. I also expect that the same attack as the one used on CPS-2 will work on CPS-3 also though the equipment needed will far more expensive.

How do you see the future of arcade emulation in general ? What will the next system be emulated ?

Well as arcades are dying it follows suit that at some point there will be nothing left to emulate. I'm sure work will still be done to make emulation more accurate though.

I'm not sure what the next system to be emulated will be, for me, all the systems I would like to see emulated already are.

What do you think of the games made by Playmore after the SNK death : Metal Slug 4, King Of Fighters 2001 & 2002, Rage Of The Dragons.....

Personally I don't like them, it seems to me that not allot of work went into these games but then again there is only so much you can do to make a fighter different from other fighters. Maybe I'm a little bias though because I must admit I was never that keen on fighters in general, I like shooters more.

How do you see the future of MVS ? Do u think that Samurai Shodown 5 will be the last game for MVS ?

There is a future for MVS but only in collector circles. I don't think there will be any other games released on the Arcade format in Cart form as already SNK vs Capcom was released as a dedicated JAMMA game. Of course there can still be homebrew games made on the NeoGeo, I must say from a dev standpoint the system is very easy to program.

Your point of view upon crossover which become a real marketing argument (like SNK Vs Capcom, Sammy vs Capcom etc...)

That's all it is really, pure marketing but I'm sure money will be made from SNK vs Capcom games as the rivalry has always been there. That's Rivalry from the gamers standpoint and not the companies, It's a little like what you could call Amiga vs Atart ST if you get my point.

What do you think of the Capcom decision to leave the arcade market ?

Although sad it's the right decision for them to make. Gaming in the arcades is dying and dead in many places already. You just have to go into arcades and see video games slowly disappearing to be replaced by slot machines. At present the only way for these companies to exist is making games for consoles (which caused the death of the arcade in my view) and the PC. Although this sounds a bleak picture there is a new hope for arcades and that's in virtual Reality gaming in my view. Once _good_ VR systems are created it will be a new birth for the arcade as VR technology will be to expensive for the normal home user. This is basically what happened in the early 80's as games were far better in the arcades than the games one could play at home.

Have you got secret projet to tell us ?

I'm sorry to say I have not. The next project if any will probably be CPS-3 but I have no immediate plans to look at it.

Thank you very much Raz !

No problem.
