Supposedly some weird ass codec so I just used VLC Player.

Just use the latest ffdshow (2005 build) and maybe Matroska and Vorbis. That's all you'll ever need.

Yeah, it's a funky encoding. If you lazy to do any major findings, use VLC, if not, you need the latest FFDSHOW
