How to setup Speed Racer

Complete Speed Racer setup instructions

These instructions are keyboard-centric, but it should be pretty obvious how to make it go with a wheel and pedals or an analog joystick too 

 

1) Delete nvram/speedrcr.nv and cfg/speedrcr.cfg

2) Start Speed Racer.

3) When instructed, press TEST (F2)

4) For the “neutral” position, press JUMP (1)

5) For steering right, press and hold the right arrow on your keyboard. Wait a second, then press JUMP (1)

6) For steering left, press and hold the left arrow on your keyboard. Wait a second, then press JUMP (1)

7) For the gas, press and hold the left CTRL key on your keyboard. Wait a second, then press JUMP (1)

TEST MENU will appear.

9) Press SPACE until SWITCH TEST is selected. Press SERVICE (9) to enter.

10) Verify the response of the steering and gas. If it looks good, press SERVICE (9) to exit.

11) Tap F2. Screen will flicker, but nothing will happen.

12) Press Esc to exit MAME. For MAME versions with an integrated GUI (MAME32, MacMAME) exit the app completely for maximum safety.

13) Start MAME.

And for Cyber Cycles fans:

An important note for u1: Cyber Cycles needs to be calibrated before it’ll steer properly. Luckily it works the same way as Final Lap R and other Namco racers. Hold down Service (’9′ by default) and tap Test (F2) until you see an “INITIALIZING” or “INITIALIZED” message. After that happens, quit the game (Esc) to make sure the calibration is saved, and then it should work properly.
