garyoak99 Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 What is the fastest way to learn how to play Mahjong? I ask this question because I started annoying my friends when I had a winning hand and I didn't even know it! Then I started asking too many questions and then I took too much time pondering my next move! What is the fastest way to learn how to play Mahjong WITHOUT annoying friends or family with too many questions? Are there any Flash games out there that are good for learning the game?
Agozer Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 Multiple Arcade Mahjong EmulatorDoes it actually HELP you to learn Mahjongg, instead of just offering assloads of Mahjongg games that are all in japanese? ... I would really like to know. I knew how to play Mahjongg long ago, but I've forgotten most of it.
ken_cinder Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I'm pretty sure theres some in English. But that was more just a stab at the way overupdated emulator that is MAME. They release new versions far too often, and most of the time with nothing of interest even to an avid collector.....obscure garbage.
garyoak99 Posted February 10, 2006 Author Posted February 10, 2006 Does it actually HELP you to learn Mahjongg, instead of just offering assloads of Mahjongg games that are all in japanese? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep, that is exactly my question too. I've played a Mahjong game on MAME before but it was completely in Japanese so I didn't know what they kept going on about! I didn't know if they were saying I couldn't do that or whether I was doing it correctly! Which games are English? Are there any Flash Mahjong games on any websites?
Ryuken Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 just so u guys know, there's japanese mahjong, taiwanese, cantonese, and some other kinds
Unessential Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 you can make an account at game sites... I can't think of any good ones at the top of my head right now but Yahoo is a crappy one, and you can always do a search on google.
Agozer Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 There's this really cool game called Kyodai Mahjongg (2006 version is the latest), and ironically, it really isn't Mahjongg at all, but a Taipei-style memory game variation.
Dooz Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 There's a form of mahjong that has a tutorial in the game Suikoden IV. If you can get past the fact that Suikoden IV sucks, then maybe you can learn from there.
Wizard Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 lol! my mom doesn't allow me to play because it's a form of gambling. But I do it anyways. Google came up with some results http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/mahjong/mahjong.html That being the most notable. Very simple!
Robert Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I used to play a dos version that had instructions included. I still remember; the object is to remove all the tiles. You click on 2 that matched (same picture on each). They must be free (nothing on top, not boxed in by other tiles to left and right). Pretty easy really.

Chinese Mahjong is the one I am most interested in! I'm not interested in Taipei-style memory game variations though. I don't have Suikoden IV and I don't even have a PS2 so that is out of the question. I've already visited that tutorial on that website last year. Robert, any idea what that game was called? Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Agozer Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Robert, any idea what that game was called? Kyodai Mahjongg and countless other Taipei clones.

It sounds more like a memory variation than an actual Mahjong game though. Does anyone else have any further suggestions?
ken_cinder Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 My wife bought Moraff's Maximum Mahjongg Vol. 3 last year, and it's got plenty of different game types on it. It also has 200 tilesets and a bunch of other junk. It's all in English and she only paid like $6 for it. Pretty good idea to find it if you want to learn.
