Virtual PC is free

Anyone tried this thing, Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 ?

Virtual PC lets you create separate virtual machines on your Windows desktop, each of which virtualizes the hardware of a complete physical computer. Use virtual machines to run operating systems such as MS-DOS®, Windows, and OS/2. You can run multiple operating systems at once on a single physical computer and switch between them as easily as switching applications—instantly, with a mouse click.

Virtual PC is perfect for any scenario in which you need to support multiple operating systems, whether you use it for tech support, legacy application support, training, or just for consolidating physical computers.

It's recommended to use XP professional, although I'm told it will run with XP Home.

I'm tempted to give it a go and be able to get rid of some old computers.

Yeah I got this to be able to play Tomb Raider again. The only downside is it wouldn't play the audio tracks off the disc. The video card that it emulates only has 4MB of VRAM and can't be upgraded in any way. There are other issues that are preventing me from playing an old copy of Dragon's Lair on it as well. It did however run some really old DOS games that I had on an old CD. I can't be sure but I think the sound might be a little off on them but I haven't played them in years so...

I would suggest that you keep at least one of your old computers that has some good hardware to play games that won't play on XP and that might have trouble with Virtual PC. Like all of the other emulators out there this is in no way perfect but it's as close as you can get to the real thing. Seeing Windows 98 again sure did bring back memories...when my old games worked.

[EDIT]

Even thought Virual PC saysy it will only run on Windows 2000 and XP Pro I have been able to use it on this XP Home computer I have. The insaller will complain but will continue to insall. That's what it did for me anyway.

Under the system requirements, it says:

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86); Windows XP Service Pack 2

So that must mean XP Home w/ Sp 2 is ok... I'm confuzzuled... :)
