.Zip and .DEFs

Yet another newb fascinated by the ways of mugen. just a few questions that I have looked for around this forum but my programming knowledge is low, so I'm not really grasping the def files explainations. As of right now I have only the capabilities of changing win mugen into win mugen with EVE. besides that I'm lost as hell.

 

For Characters

 

What I have done is gone to a website and downloaded a character saving it to the char file as mentioned (leaving it as a .ZIP because not sure if you have to) then gone to data/SELECT and since this is set up differently I'm assuming you just replace character one with the specified character for example:

 

if I wanted chunli I find her download, then put chunli.zip in char, go to data/select and replace "character[1] with chunli.def?
