Quicker video streaming ?

Im tired of my damn computer always streaming videos at 56k speed. It really kills the video when wit freezes and has to buffer every 30 seconds. does anyone know a way were i can configure the settings in my computer to allow faster streaming when im watching a video? I have a okay dsl connection that goes kinda fast when i use the internet, i cant say the same for when im watching videos.
