ASSEMbler has posted a detailed comparison at his forum of the prototype alpha controller for Nintendo's "Ultra 64" against an in-between beta and what ended up as the final Nintendo 64 controller. This should be of interest to anyone who followed the whole Ultra 64 thing but likely never got to see the controller (which really isn't that far a departure from the 3-pronged N64 monstrosity).

There are several versions of the Ultra 64 controller, starting with

prototypes, working samples, and then transition to the N64 controller we

all know. There are some major differences between the two.

What we have above is an Ultra 64 controller, using a hand assembled PCB

that doesn't even have the memory card components. It features many

interesting changes... It took a minor act of

God to get this item, so please don't ask.

You can read the whole article here.

I like that the 'C' buttons were bigger on this prototype. The trigger being small sucks though. Overall it looks 'cheaper' than the final model, which could just come down to it not being the production unit..

That was one of the weirdest videos I've ever seen. Did I hear heavy breathing in the background? It probably needed a voice over or something.

so.....this is just like....

"Hey guys... look what they're making for a system ur not gonna use."

Or can it be used for Virtual Console?

I guess a more accurate question would be what is Ultra 64?

Ultra 64 was the code name for the Nintendo 64.

Do you know what a prototype is? It takes a lot of tries to land on the final controller design.

Oh so it was the first one....

I think they did pretty well with thier final decision..

I wish sum1 would post the controller betas for th xbox!

That's almost definitely not the first prototype because it is so similar to the final product. I remember seeing some prototype controllers for the Wii and they were quite strange.

The only thing better than seeing a rare item surface in the hands of a fan is hearing that fan throw it around like it's a $2 MadCatz controller.

Where's the love? :(
