I was talking to a girl that originally hails from Rhode Island, she told me she had no idea she had an accent till she came to Cali. Saying that people here in Cali do not really have a unique way of speaking. She also said it might be because people from all over the states/Canada/world are always coming to and already in Cali. I agree that I do notice that people from other states do have a profound difference in there form of verbal expression. What do all of you think?

Most people on the west coast do not have an accent. I was born in Whittier and I lived in Tucson, AZ and near Seattle in WA... most states along/near that coast lack a distinct accent. However, we do have a lot of distinct slang -- which makes it obvious where we're from.

It's more of a different types of dialect in california than an accent. Different parts of california have different types of dialect.

I don't even know if I have an accent. I probably sound like someone from the backwoods of Europe anyway.
