And yes, Mame works in XP. Both DOS and Windows (Mame32) versions. I can't speak for other unofficial releases, and quite frankly.......all those ones are useless.

 

Anywhere you have read complaints about it NOT, are complaints written by people who are doing EVERYTHING wrong, and should be coming HERE to ask for help. hehe

Download Mame32 instead. then it works with a GUI perfectly
