If you ask me closing geocities cleaned up the net a bit. Anyone who knew anything about anything was hosted somewhere else. There was a reason people called it Geoshitties. That is where I started my first site and where I learned HTML. I thought they were a great user-friendly starting point for new users. Unfortunately, all of these services have fallen WAY behind the times and their importance is non-existent. I can respect him for wanting to back up GeoCities though, it's a part of the internet that will be lost forever.
