I think it would look better if Sonic and the rings were 2D sprites instead of poorly antialiased 3D models.

You'll find less and less true 2D on consoles these days. It's all about 3D on a 2D plane, whether one likes it or not.

I'm not so sure that's a bad thing. Sonic Team obviously had a few wins, but they've also had a lot of problems. They failed to transition Sonic to 3D during the Saturn's run and their later games met limited success. Even the classic games were notoriously glitchy and were all rush jobs.
