At the start of the year a huge discovery was made within the Nintendo Virtual Boy community. The unreleased, unfinished and previously undiscovered 3D port of Faceball was located and preserved. After just a matter of weeks and change of events, a playable ROM of the Niko-Chan Battle prototype has leaked online and is ready for download.

 

The new owner of this Nintendo Virtual Boy prototype game was hoping to create reproduction copies in mock packaging to recuperate the initial investment of this historic piece. Unfortunately, due to a series of warnings and legal threats received via email, the owner has since backed down on these plans and released the Faceball (Niko-Chan Battle) ROM for free.

 

Upon initial tests in both a Virtual Boy emulator and on the original hardware (using a FlashBoy flash cartridge), this ROM unfortunately seems to requires the latter. Graphical and audio glitches seem to be present when the game is run through the emulator Reality Boy, such as flickering walls and distorted music.

 

Issues aside, Faceball for the Nintendo Virtual Boy (once run through the original hardware) is without a doubt of the most technically impressive and enjoyable titles to have missed a release on the fabled system. Sat alongside the also unreleased title, Bound High, these two prototypes are very much suggesting that the Nintendo Virtual Boy was not given enough time to showcase its true abilities.
