ive d'ld some outlaw star episodes ripped off a dvd which xp recognises as an ogm file. what is one of these and how to i convert into a valid film format to say be able to play on divx player.

That's an OGG Vorbis Media file. In short, you need an OGG Vorbis encoder/decoder for it to work.
