SpyderX Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 Hey guys i wanna go shopping for a really nice machine, i want the best cpu so i dont have to upgrade it for a while. I have these cpu's in mind for my price budget... - Intel P4 478pin 3200C- Intel P4 775pin 3200E- Amd Athlon 462pin XP3200+- Amd Althon64 754pin 3200+- Amd Althon64 754pin 3400+ What is the best for: - Gaming- Emulation- Overclocking- Heaps of leeching downloads of da net- Running multiple applications Also is it worth getting DDR2, is there a big difference ? All your help is appreciated... thanx
Gryph Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 AMD Athlon 64 754pin 3400+ definitely. The 939 pins are better because they allow dual channel DDR but it isn't that big of a performance hit if you don't. I wouldn't go for DDR2 just yet...
Agozer Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 (edited) Oh so there is already a 3400+ model of Athlon 64? Fascinating. Edited August 14, 2004 by Agozer
Gryph Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 Athlon 64s go all the way up to 3800. Then there is also the FX series which is up to 53 right now but 55 and 57 should be coming out soon.
Agozer Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 I read somewhere that soon processor manufacturers don't need to increase the clockspeeds since home computers will be powerful enough to run any software.
Gryph Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 That's bullcrap as long as the gaming industry is around. Perhaps they can improve in other ways like increase on-die cache size and more pipelines and crap but they will eventually have to increase clock speeds.

Wizard Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 All that: AMD Athlon XP or 64. Depending on what ARE your corrected demands. I can make a simple plan. Money saving = Athlon XP 2800+ or higher and 512 MB of RAMFull out Gaming = 64 3200+ or higher, or god forbid, the uber expensive FX, 1 GB of RAM This is why people need to tell others a buget or something.
SpyderX Posted August 15, 2004 Author Posted August 15, 2004 so i shouldnt get a Intel P4 775pin 3200E..... i thought pentiums were better
Wizard Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Each one has their ups and downs. But practically all games these days are most noteably played better on AMD systems.
Ryuken Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 i thought P4 is better but anyway get AMD Athlon XP 3200+ cuz they cost less than P4
